Ireland Records 7.8M Visitors In 2007, +5.0% On Year
DUBLIN (Dow Jones)--Ireland's tourism development authority, Failte Ireland, said Tuesday that it recorded 7.8 million overseas visitors in 2007, up 5.0% on the year.
Failte Ireland Chairperson Gillian Bowler said both domestic and overseas tourism revenue in 2007 increased 6.5% to EUR6.5 billion. The organization says this makes up about 4.0% of gross national product.
Looking ahead, Bowler said the industry is aiming for another 5.0% growth rate in overseas visitors in 2008 to 8.2 million, helped by a EUR50 million-strong tourism marketing fund earmarked by the government.
"However," Bowler added, "given the unpredictable nature of a number of key factors including the weakness of the dollar, oil prices and financial markets, the level of growth for 2008 is difficult to assess."
